MustLuvBoxers Rescue

Holly Adams founded MustLuvBoxers Rescue in 2013 when she decided to transform an internet forum dedicated to her favorite dog breed into a non-profit rescue that could serve Boxer dogs all along the West Coast. Under her leadership, the rescue saved 58 dogs in 2014, 66 in 2015, and now consistently saves more than 100 dogs each year.Holly serves as the rescue’s president, leading its 250+ volunteers and managing its day-to-day operations. She organizes and assists in all aspects of animal intake such as working with shelters or citizens surrendering dogs, arranging transportation for incoming dogs, and matching dogs with safe and loving foster homes. She also is actively involved in the adoption process, reviewing adoption applications, interviewing applicants, and helping to arrange home-checks prior to approved adoptions. When Holly isn’t helping Boxer dogs get back on their feet and into loving homes, she’s working as a physical therapy assistant helping patients literally get back on their feet. She also loves taking her dogs, Piper and Stevie, to go running at the beach.

Meet Higgins

Please say hello to Higgins! He is a 9–10-month-old Boxer mix who is working on house and crate training, is neutered and current on his vaccines, and is being fostered in Yelm, WA. He is a small boy, only weighing about 20-25lbs and it seems unlikely that he will get too much bigger. Higgins is a timid fellow that is slow to trust and takes a hot minute to warm up to new people. He is a Velcro dog that picks his person in the house, and that is the person that he is going to follow and be attached to, and hides behind, when faced with new people. He is not a flight risk as the outside world is big and scary and he would much prefer the safety of his home. Due to these fears, his leash skills need some work but with patience and encouragement, we are confident he’ll figure out that good times await him when the leash comes out.  Higgins warms up to other dogs very quickly, though it'll take him some time to feel comfortable enough to play with them. His foster home has a 50lbs boxer mix that he loves to wrestle and play tug with even if she is twice his size. Once he warms up, though, he is a happy bouncy puppy whose tail never stops wagging. Typical of puppies, he gets nippy and mouthy while playing, but he quickly accepts a “no” correction. He sometimes needs a little direction on what is appropriate to chew on and what is not, but he is not destructive, he just needs to have toys available as an outlet. Housetraining is coming along and having him on a schedule helps minimize accidents, though he is still too scared to go potty outside by himself, he wants someone to go out there with him. He is more likely to go outside and go potty without his human if he has a doggie sibling to accompany him. Crate training is going great. He goes in on command and makes minimal noise while he's in there, though he can get a little whiny sometimes. He sleeps through the night, eats his food in his crate, and will even go in on his own when he is feeling uncomfortable.   It is likely that Higgins could spend the first few days in his forever home very shut down. But once he's comfortable, he blossoms. He needs a family that will be patient with him and help him build his confidence. He is a bundle of joy that loves everyone in his family once he's grown comfortable with them all. Higgins will be a great family dog who is affectionate and cuddly. He would do great with another confident doggie friend to help him build his confidence. If you think Higgins would be a good fit for your lifestyle, please let us know by submitting an adoption application - www.mustluvboxersrescue.com/adopt.
