Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County

The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a no-kill facility owned and operated by the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County. It is located at the intersection of Rt. 29 North and Stagebridge Road (Rt. 624) , just two miles north of Lovingston. Presently the facility is open daily from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. The Adoption Center houses dogs and cats. The dogs are contained in individual rooms, one or two to a room, with wall murals painted by area artists and hemi-sync music from a sound system donated by the Monroe Institute. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in the rooms getting acquainted with the dogs and cats prior to adoption. Cats and kittens are housed in colorful cat condos with handcrafted furniture for climbing and perching.Adoption fees cover the cost of vaccinations, worming, heartworm test or feline leukemia/aids test and spaying/neutering. All adult animals are provided these veterinary services prior to adoption. Kittens and puppies are adopted out with neutering certificates covering the cost of these veterinary services at the appropriate age. Many of the animals come from unclaimed or surrendered animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility. These animals have been judged to be adoptable based on temperament and looks. The Center does accept animals being surrendered by Nelson residents on a space available and adoptability basis. I am a volunteer. Among other things, I take photos of animals and post them on the internet for exposure to the public. Website: http://www.nelsonspca.org/index.htm

Meet Felix

UPDATE 7/31/22: Felix the Walker hound is a good-times boy, looking for someone to yodel with him and take him to explore the wilds. His enthusiasm is inspiring. He has the heart to be an all-day hiking companion, or a partner for dedicated runners. He is an athlete! With a little direction, Felix could be a serious contender in a variety of dog sports such as Lure coursing, Tracking, Agility, Fly ball. His general good nature toward dogs and people add to his great potential. Food and toys work as positive motivators for him to accomplish tasks. Felix is already learning leash manners and how to wait politely. He is respectful of items in his room and is trying to keep his space clean.Sadly, this lanky (53 pounds @3 years old) hound was left running free to fend for himself, before he ended up with us. Now, he has been neutered, vaccinated, and wormed. With good meals, he has gained needed weight. Heartworm and tick-borne disease testing will be completed soon. He shows his good nature every day by being friendly with all of Almost Home’s staff (even a staff member’s child), volunteers and visitors. He seems interested in becoming friends with most of our other dogs. When introduced to our cats, Felix shrank away in fear. Mostly, he behaves in a confident way and seems to enjoy every breath he takes.Felix would do best with people who enjoy leading a dog through basic training, who like active athletic hounds, who don’t mind dogs that can sometimes be vocal, who have another dog that enjoys interacting with other dogs, who have a fenced area or large and safe open area where he can run while supervised, who enjoy training dogs for fun dog activities. If you can’t resist the tight muscles of a hound ready to go, his nose vibrant to scents, a happy howl thrown to the wind just for the joy of it, Felix won’t disappoint. He will be available for adoption soon.Felix the Walker hound is a good-times boy, looking for someone to yodel with him and take him to explore the wilds. His enthusiasm is inspiring.
