K Kids Dachshund Rescue Inc

K Kids Dachshund Rescue Inc was incorporated in VA in February 2018 and approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization in early May. We have a firm commitment to the well being of the dachshund breed with an emphasis on controlling overpopulation through spay/neuter, placing dachshunds from shelters and owner surrenders in high quality adoptive homes through a rigorous screening process, and educating owners about how to keep their dachshunds happy and healthy through proper nutrition and exercise, how to handle health problems common to the breed including intervertebral disc disease and pancreatitis, and how to handle behavior problems through training and persistence.

Meet Sunshine and Vanessa

Sunshine (12 yo) and Vanessa (14 yo) are a bonded pair. Vanessa is tiny and just wants a lap. Sunshine is a barky sassy dachshund girl. Both had recent dentals and had some major extractions. Vanessa is a little hard to keep weight on, and Sunshine is hard to get weight off of. They both love adventuring in their fosters' yard and going for walks. They both love laps and attention. Both are very loyal and loving and chill. Reliability housebroken and crate trained. Sunshine did have an IVDD episode recently where she woke up one day unable to use any of her legs. With some meds and rest, she recovered. We can’t guarantee that won’t happen again, but she shouldn’t do a lot of stairs, jumping, etc. That should help prevent reoccurrences. The girls haven’t been spayed yet. We focused on their dentals as they both have heart murmurs and didn’t want them to stay under too long. We always spay our dogs, but there has been some debate as to whether we should spay these girls. We can discuss that with their adopter! These girls have a momma who loves them desperately but can’t care for them anymore near Winchester, VA. We would request that the adopters stay in touch with her daughter or at least share updates with K Kids that we can share with the family. Go to kkidsrescue.org to apply. The adoption fee is $200 each.

Adoption Process
We have a rigorous process whereby the applicant applies online and is carefully screened to ensure that all currently owned pets have been spayed/neutered and are up to date on vaccinations and on monthly heart worm meds. The applicant provides vet and personal refs and must demonstrate that he/she is capable and willing to commit to the dachshund for the rest of his/her life providing love, neutron, exercise, and appropriate veterinary care, and that a plan is established for what happens if the adopter can no longer care for the dachshund or if the dachshund outlives him/her. A home visit is required prior to being approved to adopt and if all goes well and the match is right, K Kids and the adopter execute an adoption agreement after the fee has been collected. Fees are $350 for puppies, $275 for adult dogs ages 1-7, and $150 for senior dogs ages 8 and older. Then the adopter can take possession of the dachshund. If he/she does not get the dachshund wanted, K Kids keeps the application on file for when a suitable match can be made.

Look for other dogs for adoption!
