ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center

In March 2013, the ASPCA launched the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center, a pilot program located at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey. It was the first and only facility dedicated to providing behavioral rehabilitation for severely fearful, unadoptable dogs, such as those confiscated from puppy mills and hoarding situations.Due to the success of the pilot program, which had 237 graduates over four years, the ASPCA has expanded its program and built a permanent facility in Weaverville, North Carolina. The state-of-the-art facility can house up to 65 dogs at a time. It includes a dormitory and several teaching spaces where shelter professionals can learn our behavior modification techniques, to further help behaviorally challenged dogs across the country become suitable for adoption.Homeless dogs of all ages and backgrounds are eligible for the program, as long as they are physically healthy and meet our behavioral inclusion criteria. Only dogs whose fear is so severe that it compromises their quality of life and makes adoption challenging or impossible are accepted. The Weaverville facility has individual kennels, along with "real-life rooms," designed to help dogs get used to life in home environments, outdoor play areas, and a large indoor training area where our behaviorists and trainers work with dogs in the program. On average, rehabilitation requires 13 weeks of treatment. However, that timing depends heavily on the severity of each dog's behavior problems and how responsive he or she is to treatment. Once the dogs have completed the program, the transformed graduates are placed within our network of partner shelters and rescue groups to be made available for adoption or via direct adoption.

Meet Lula

Lula came to us at the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center last September, and we have been getting to know her and helping her become the best dog she can be! After weeks of practicing the basics, such as walking on a leash, she finally started forming relationships with our staff. Now, she is a silly girl who loves to play, go on walks and even enjoys some gentle petting. This gentle soul is ready to find a loving home of her own! Big fan of: Other dogs! Lula is a spry dog who still has lots of puppy energy in her, and she would love having another dog around to play with. While adjusting to life in her new home, a dog sibling would also help her learn the ropes. Lula also loves to play with toys and go on walks—she might become a great hiking buddy! Car rides used to make Lula very fearful, but with some practice and pharmaceutical support, she now enjoys riding to a fun destination. Working on: Being shy about new people petting her. Lula has grown a lot during her stay with us, and we’ve learned that she loves food and quickly trusts anyone who gives her cheese! Though we can’t be certain about Lula’s past, it is likely that she has not lived in a home before. She will need a kind, patient adopter who is willing to give her the time and space she needs to adjust. Lula is still working on some obedience skills, but her food motivation is sure to make her a quick study, and she will soon perfect all her doggy manners. Dream home: One with a family who will be understanding of Lula’s difficult past. She will benefit from an adopter who will help continue her training, but will also understand if she makes a mistake every once in a while. After all, nobody’s perfect. With some more practice, she might get pretty close to perfect, though! If you can provide this fun, playful lady—who can also be a lazy couch potato—with the second chance she’s been waiting for, please submit an adoption inquiry here: https://airtable.com/shr1nGkF2RcpTMHYQ Please note: Our meet-and-greets take place in Weaverville, North Carolina.
