Cumberland County Animal Shelter

Cumberland County Animal Shelter houses approximately 2000 animals every year. They have a small staff of a shelter Director and two full-time employees with the rest of the staff made up of part-timers who come and go. As a private, retired citizen, The shelter director has authorized me to go into the shelter five days a week to photograph animals to post at online adoption sites. I add, edit and then delete animals when they have been adopted or are no longer available. Because they do not have a large enough staff to handle this type of work, I am able to do it for the shelter, mostly from my home, as a free service.

Meet SQUIRT

SQUIRT is listed as a five month old female bulldog mix. Her intake weight was 15 pounds. She arrived at the shelter with eight other dogs at the end of February 2025 as part of a group that immediately was put on court hold. The dogs had been left behind on a property tied up without any food. A person familiar with the property alerted animal control at the sheriffs department and they were able to get authority to take the dogs into custody and move them to the Cumberland County Animal Shelter. The court hold has been lifted and the dogs are now available for adoption. Like most of the dogs in the group, SQUIRT is friendly with staff and sweet. She has not yet been spayed to their knowledge and that must be done before she can go home with you as your own. Serious adopters are encouraged to CALL the shelter to schedule an adoption appointment. Staff can explain the adoption procedures and fees when you call. The shelter does require EXACT change in the form of cash or a check. The shelter is UNABLE to accept credit or debit. So, please go prepared!

Adoption Process
Adoption contract, Adoption fee of $50 per cat and $80 per dog set by county commission and subject to change, drivers license and cash or check only. The adoption fees currently cover most, but not all, of the spay/neuter cost incurred by the county.
