Second Chance Companions

We are an all-volunteer organization, started in 1993 dedicated to helping animals in SW Washington and the Portland Metro area. We have a small number of foster homes that take in dogs/cats (and sometimes other small animals) and no central facility, but we also work as a referral service for private owners who are looking for homes for their pets (we do the screening for them and also provide education to try to encourage them to keep their pets, when possible). We have a low-cost spay/neuter program for the public to try to try to curb pet overpopulation. We also work with our local Meals on Wheels program to provide pet food to Meals on Wheels recipients, individuals in assisted living and senior facilities, and area food banks. When we have the funds, we also provide emergency medical assistance to individuals.

Meet Samoa

Samoa is a 1 1/2 yr old 66 lb female German Shepherd & Boxer mix who has a lot of love to give. She is smart and loves to work for you. She will thrive with a strong leader -- otherwise she is prone to anxiety & a lack of confidence. She is house-trained, crate-trained, basic obedience trained, she needs more basic leash training as she tends to pull. She will do best with a shepherd savvy owner capable of providing her with guidance, confidence building as well as physical and mental stimulation. She is somewhat of a 'velcro' dog as she follows her people everywhere, keeping them in sight. Samoa LOVES to fetch and BALL IS LIFE. She also loves to go on car rides and is a happy, calm traveler. She does not get on furniture. This loyal and affectionate girl is slow to warm up to new people & barks when people come into her home/space. She will need an owner who is comfortable managing her safe introductions to strangers, but once you earn her trust, she's very eager to please. Samoa has lived with other dogs and loves to play with them; she's good with big dogs. At this time we are prioritizing a home for Samoa as the only dog until she can build her confidence and feel less anxious about her surroundings. She lived with a cat when she was a pup and did not exhibit any prey drive. She lived in a home with small children and has done well with them, but we would prefer to place her in an adult only home. Samoa's owner is a young woman in the military who expects to be deployed soon. Samoa is up to date on vaccines but does need to be spayed, that will be included in her adoption donation of $300. If you are interested in meeting this beauty please fill out an adoption application at and we'll connect you with the family so you can meet her!
