Best Friend Pet Adoption

Best Friend Pet Adoption (BFPA) is a no-kill animal rescue organization based in central North Carolina. BFPA has no building, office, or shelter. We are an all-foster network committed to helping dogs and cats in need of homes. Individual donations are our most important source of income as we receive no public funding. Our purpose is to provide medical assistance, foster homes, and adoption services to previously lost, abandoned, abused, or neglected animals in Wake County, NC and the surrounding counties. Our mission is to educate this disposable society in which we live that every life should be valued and cherished and is directly linked to human responsibility and commitment.Almost all the animals we rescue require immediate medical attention. BFPA never turns away or euthanizes an animal because of the expense involved in returning them to good health. All our rescued animals are evaluated for temperament, examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, microchipped (if possible) and sterilized, if age appropriate. Cats and dogs receive monthly flea/tick preventative and dogs also receive monthly heartworm preventative. The most important ingredients we provide to these animals are loving care and a safe haven -- something most of them have never experienced. These cats and dogs live in volunteer foster homes until we find them a loving permanent home, however long it takes. We match these precious beings to a single, couple or family who understand cats and dogs should be full participating members of the family. Our hope is that these animals never have to experience being unloved again.Since our beginning, BFPA has rescued and placed over 2,500 cats and dogs into their forever homes.BFPA was created in 1998 by two Raleigh-area women who had volunteered with other established rescues in the Triangle. Their dedication to help homeless dogs and cats has led to an organization that has grown to over 225 volunteers strong.BFPA received 501(c)(3) status in 1999.

Meet Gruff

PLEASE NOTE: If you are on PetFinder or other search site, you do NOT need to introduce yourself.  All dogs on our website ARE available and require an approved Best Friend Pet Adoption application before you can be considered or meet any of our dogs.  The link to our application is in the dogs bio below.    FOSTER DOG INFORMATION: Gruff is a 30 lb. terrier mix, who was an owner surrender to a rural shelter.  The shelter estimated his age as12 years old but based on his teeth and activity level, the vet thinks he’s probably younger.  He is a lap dog looking for his forever people. The perfect home for Gruff will be as an only dog with an owner who will continue training. He’s a great cuddle buddy and loves being next to his people! He is a little too interested in kitties, so a home without cats is best! Prior to coming into our foster home, it does not appear he had any training. He will need a patient home to work on learning. He can sit. While he likes to follow his people around the house, when I’m in the kitchen, he’ll sit away from me, not under my feet, and just hope I’ll drop something! Gruff has been very friendly with people and  loves attention!  Gruff gets along with other dogs with proper introduction. He has been friendly with all but one dog we have interacted with and got along well with the dogs in the shelter. He requires proper introduction and cannot feel threatened, or he will try to dominate the situation. Gruff  has only been around teens and does fine as long as there are no surprises. Small children would not be recommended as he has low tolerance for being touched when he wants to be left alone. Gruff is totally housebroken,  we’ve had no accidents. We work from home so the longest he’s been left during the day in between potty breaks is 4-6 hours. At night, he usually goes out between 9-10:00 PM and doesn’t go out again until 6-6:30 AM.  Gruff's activity level is moderate.  He is very good on a leash and will walk for as long as you do! He loves his walks and can walk for several miles just fine. But he’s also just as content to take a long day’s nap!  Gruff does not need a fenced yard.  He would do just fine in an apartment, condo or no yard home as long as he gets walks to do his business. Gruff does not tolerate a crate at all but does just fine in the house with no issues. We have no accidents or damage. At night, he either sleeps next to our bed in his dog bed or with our 15 yr old daughter in her bed!  When we leave the house he’ll curl up in his dog bed (or a human bed) or on a blanket in my recliner and sleep! Gruff loves, long naps during the day and belly rubs! He also loves car rides and after a period of interest, he’ll curl up in the back seat and take a nap.  Gruff is a 30 lb. lap dog! He loves curling up and is a big teddy bear! When he has the chance, he tries to get in my lap and give lots of licking kisses!  If you want a best buddy to hang with you around the house, in the car and on walks, Gruff will be your forever friend.   EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Unfortunately Gruff's owner could no longer care for him.  BFPA stepped in to help him find her forever home. Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed.  Applicants must live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized.  Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions.  We therefore require applicants to live within an hours drive of Cary NC.   INTERESTED IN ADOPTING GRUFF?
