Almost Home Dog Rescue

We are a small group of volunteers whose goal is to save the lives of homeless dogs suffering in high-kill shelters. In doing so, we hope to provide an alternative to the purchase of puppy-mill and pet-store dogs, thereby reducing the demand for and ultimately the supply of such dogs. We strive to match each dog with the right family after the dog has been observed in a foster home.

Meet Hazel

Are you looking for a very sweet, affectionate girl who is joyful at life away from the shelter? Hazel is a wonderful 1.5 year old, 32 lb  dog who will make a spectacular addition to a loving home! Hazel loves anything outdoor, including walking, hiking, and running, or simply chilling in the yard. She is a goofy, dopey girl who LOVES life – it is wonderful watching her come into herself and embrace her endearing personality. Hazel is incredibly soft with big floppy ears, and loves to be pet, although sometimes she is a little shy at first. Hazel came from Kentucky with a lot of nutritional needs, and has been filling out nicely on puppy food – she will need to transition to regular food once she reaches an optimal weight. She sleeps well through the night in the crate, and has sustained a few hours by herself during the day in a pen and crate. She is doing great with potty training, and now knows how to notify her humans when it’s time to go. She is also a rock star with training – she is very food motivated but also is learning not to expect it. Given Hazel’s new lease on life and excitement to have other dogs to be around, she has a very energetic play style and sometimes has a tough time stopping and relaxing. With that, she would do great as an only dog (perhaps with some doggy daycare), or with other young dogs with similar play styles. She is very respectful of our older dog who doesn’t have any interest in playing, the play desire is just focused towards our younger (and very passive) pup. We are actively working towards helping her settle around younger dogs without expecting play, and thus far she has been responding very well to behavioral shaping using relational and positive reinforcement. We think that she will do just fine in a multi-dog household given the right approach. Please consider this wonderful girl as a loving addition to your family!   (Local adoptions preferred — Philadelphia and tri-state area [South Jersey and northern Delaware] only.) PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTACTING US! We are NOT a shelter: All of our dogs live in private homes with foster families. Come and meet the Almost Home dogs and their fosters at our Meet & Greet events, where you can learn more about our wonderful dogs from the people who live with them, find out which dogs are on their way and when they’ll arrive, and fill out an application to adopt or foster. We cannot adopt to homes where electric-shock fencing systems or training collars are used. For more information on the dangers of electric-shock collars, please visit banshockcollars.ca/studies.php . We do not have an online adoption application; to request an application, e-mail us at [email protected]. To speed e-mail processing time, be sure to note the name of the dog you are inquiring about in the Subject line. For Meet & Greet times and locations, visit our home page, where you also will find information on our adoption process and fees. FOSTER FAMILIES ARE LIFESAVERS!! Can you open your heart and home for a few weeks to homeless shelter dog? Remember, by fostering a dog, you save TWO lives — that of your foster dog, and that of the dog who takes his place in the shelter! Come to a Meet & Greet and find out if fostering is for you — there's no reward quite like the feeling that you've saved a life ... or two!

Adoption Process
We require vet and reference checks and a home visit for all adoptions. Our adoption fee is $275 with an extra $50 deposit for unaltered puppies.
