Meet Bernard

Bernard is one of a bonded pair of Yorkie Poo's. He is available for adoption with his brother Andrew Jackson. He is 3 years old and weighs 15 lbs. The adoption fee for both boys is $600.00. We have had Andrew and Bernard for 4 weeks now. They are 3 year old bonded brothers who were very timid and fearful when we received them.  It took four hours of us sitting on the floor and softly talking to them and reassuring them they were OK before Andrew would even come near us. Bernard wouldn't even look at us and turned his body away so he couldn't see us. When Andrew came close so we could pet him it still took Bernard another hour before he would follow. Bernard needs to see Andrew do something first and then he will usually follow. As time goes on both dogs have learned to trust us and they enjoy the praise and attention they receive. In 4 weeks they have made huge adjustments. Andrew and Bernard are very different so I will describe each one separately.   Bernard Bernard is less trusting and is more cautious than his brother. It takes longer for him to feel comfortable and he usually looks for his brothers reaction to see fi it is ok. Bernard is a very quick learner and once he understands what is expected and you go slow he is usually compliant. fI he doesn't like something or he is anxious about it he will growl to let you know he is unhappy. fI you reassure him and give him a moment he is fine. At Bernard's vet visit he was found to be healthy but needed to be neutered and chipped. He was neutered and chipped last week and did wel. He also desperately needed to be groomed. We were told by his surrender she had tried to have him groomed but his reaction was so negative the groomer couldn't do it. Idiscussed this problem with the vet at the first visit and was given medication. We tried the medication and had just a meet and greet with the groomer. Bernard would not go near the groomer so the vet increased the medication. We were able to get the grooming done by staying with him through the process and using the increased dose of medication. Bernard will not let me brush him yet but we wil continue to work on this. Bernard is not a lap dog but definitely wants to be near you. He wil lay at my feet when I'm on the computer or lay next to me when sitting on the couch. He loves head rubs and praise and to sleep between our pillows on the bed at night. He is a good sleeper and doesn't move very much. Bernard loves his walks and is doing much better when he sees another dog. He became very anxious and would go after his brother. That behavior was not tolerated and we used a shaker noise bottle to distract him. Bernard doesn't like that noise and wil stop immediately. Now when he sees another dog he will look but just keep walking. Bernard has improved his social skills with new people as well. He will bark when someone is coming then approach's cautiously and checks them out. fI his brother is engaging Bernards tail wil wag and he wil engage too. Bernard traveled 2 hours ni the car this weekend and did beautifully. He went into a new home, met new people and quickly adjusted. Bernard is totally potty trained to outside, will go to the door or come to you when he need to go out. He goes out and will respond to being called back in. Bernard also understands stay and sit. Andrew and Bernard have very sweet, lovable personalities and have made wonderful progress over the last 4 weeks. These bonded brothers need a forever home where the family can be patient to give them time to adjust and build trust. They need adults to be home most of the time and can take them for long walks 2-3 times per day and will work with them to feel safe and secure. Bernard and Andrew Jackson are staying with Joan in Cherry Hill, NJ.
