Underdog Rescue MN

Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “Underdogs”Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a “Pit Bull” from Minneapolis Animal Control. While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the “anti-pitbull” policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other “bully-breeds” through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.Shannon’s dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.

Meet Souvlaki

Want to meet me? Come to the Underdog Headquarters (3345 Dakota Ave, St. Louis Park, 55416) for an Adoption Event on Sunday April 28th 10:30-11:30 am. Please email [email protected] for questions regarding the dogs.   Hey there, I'm Souvlaki, your potential new best friend! Let me tell you a little bit about myself. First things first, I'm a super sweet Yorkipoo with a heart of gold. I absolutely love people and I'm pretty smart too, if I do say so myself. My favorite thing in the world is cuddling up with you on the couch when I'm tired, and I'm definitely a bed hog – but I promise to keep your feet warm! I'm still learning how to greet other dogs without barking, once I get to say hi up close, I'm actually really friendly! Oh, and I have this thing about barking at animals on TV... I just can't help myself! I don't need another dog in my forever home as I can be a little possessive of my people and snarky with the dominate dog in my foster home. I would shine as your one and only.  Now, let's talk about my favorite activities. I absolutely love playing fetch – just throw a toy and I'll fetch it right back to you! I also enjoy my walks, although I do get a little nervous on busy streets, so my human usually carries me.  When it comes to potty training, I'm doing my best to get on a routine and am good on a schedule when the other dogs go outside. And speaking of walks, I'm doing pretty well on leash – with a little more practice with my forever family I know I will eventually be great. But here's the thing – I have really bad separation anxiety. Like, really bad. I bark and whine if my human tries to leave me alone in the house, so I need someone who can be with me most of the time. A retired person or someone who works from home would be perfect for me. So … this also means no shared walls for me so I don’t upset the neighbors. Despite my separation anxiety, I'm just the sweetest little guy you'll ever meet. I love tummy scratches and I'm very affectionate. Plus, I'm easy to groom, so you won't have to worry about any fancy grooming appointments. So, what do you say? Are you ready to welcome a cuddly, affectionate pup like me into your heart and home? I promise I'll be the best companion you could ever ask for! Excitedly wagging my tail, Souvlaki *I’m a growing puppy and I have not yet had a lot of experience with crates, kids or cats and I might bark if something alarms me, but I really love to learn and hoping for a family who will take me to a basic obedience class to continue to help me build confidence and dog skills. Ideally my forever home would need to be home during the day to help me with my potty training and not leave me for breaks longer than 3 - 4 hours. If you are looking for a best friend, please fill out the puppy application. The more info you include on the application the better so I can find a good match for my forever home. Get your toy box ready! **Obedience classes are required when adopting this puppy from Underdog Rescue. Many of our puppies have a mama who was not properly socialized before coming to Underdog Rescue. Since coming to Underdog, this puppy has been in a socialized and loving home, but that needs to be continued with its Adopters. Training classes teach puppies the ins and outs of being a pet while creating a bond with their new Adopter. Obedience classes are key to creating a relationship with your puppy while having it be a happy and successful member of society. Proof of Obedience Class registration is required for this puppy before adoptions can be finalized. If you would like some suggestions, we would be happy to send some trainers who have experience with Underdog Rescue, but a Basic Obedience class in your area should work! Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.  T his puppy requires an application fee. This fee must be paid within 24 hours or your application will be considered void.  We will not review or contact applicants that have not completed the payment portion.   Puppy Applications will be responded to within 5 business days, after receipt of the application fee.  Please understand that paying the fee does not guarantee you will be approved to adopt the puppy. Our goal is place puppies in homes that are suited for their individual needs. You may be willing and able to provide a great home, but if it doesn’t meet the specific needs of the puppy, we will not approve your application. We accept applications for puppies until we have a candidate that meets all of the requirements needed for the specific puppy and they have been contacted to review the adoption process as well as agree to all of the terms to move forward. ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***

Adoption Process
Our process for adoption is: 1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application. 2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in. 3. The foster volunteer coordinates a “meet and greet” with you and any other members of your household. 4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
