Underdog Rescue MN

Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “Underdogs”Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a “Pit Bull” from Minneapolis Animal Control. While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the “anti-pitbull” policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other “bully-breeds” through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.Shannon’s dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.

Meet Anwen

Hey there, I'm Anwen, the sweet and happy English Toy Spaniel ready to fill your life with love and snuggles! At 12 pounds, I may be small, but my heart is overflowing with affection for my humans. I'm a true snuggle bug who's always at your feet or racing you to the couch, eager to be picked up for some quality cuddle time. I started off a little timid, but now I'm twinkle toes outside, spinning with excitement on my leash and coming running whenever you call my name. I adore chasing a ball on the ground and love soft treats as rewards for being such a good girl. Recently I have started collecting my favorite toys in my kennel, if the other dogs try and get them I let them know they are mine with a little grumble. I can’t help it – I just want them all! Stairs may be a bit scary for me, but with a little encouragement and some help from my humans, I have figured out how to go up the stairs. Yay me!! We are still working on going down the stairs. While stairs are a work in progress – mealtime is not! I love my kibble softened with some water because I don’t have a lot of teeth left. With an oversized underbite and my tongue hanging out, sometimes I am a sloppy eater, but I absolutely make up for it in cuteness! I'm great with kids and other dogs of all sizes—I'm currently living happily with three other furry friends in my foster home. While I like other dogs, I don’t need another one in my forever home if you are around most of the time. And I adore the kids in my foster home! When it comes to bedtime or when my humans are away, I'm crate trained and as quiet as a mouse.  I may not be a big barker, but I'll let out a little whine of excitement when I'm feeling extra happy. I understand commands like "go potty," but mostly, I just want to be with my humans, snuggling up on their laps or burying myself in blankets. If you're looking for a sweet, affectionate companion who's always ready for a snuggle session, look no further than yours truly, Anwen! I can't wait to find my forever home with a family who loves to shower me with love and affection. *Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.   ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***

Adoption Process
Our process for adoption is: 1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application. 2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in. 3. The foster volunteer coordinates a “meet and greet” with you and any other members of your household. 4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
