Age: 1 year Size: ~38 lbs Estimated breed: Pit bull terrier/Staffordshire bull terrier mix Update from my trainer 12/21: Mavis is such a sweetheart who needs a foster or adopter ASAP as she is about to complete her board and train and will soon be left with nowhere to go! Mavis is a true low rider pocket pittie. She only weighs 35 lbs and is the most adorable little meatball. She is a beefcake with lots and lots of love to give. She comes professionally trained, and her adopter would be able to continue working with me to learn everything she knows. She is a fun girl who really needs a home with an active family. She has played great with the larger male dogs in the home but is too much energy for small dogs or cats. She would do fine with another large, active, social dog in the home or would also be great as the only dog, soaking up all the attention for herself. She is the type of dog who you can take anywhere. She is so much tinier than she looks in her pictures. You won't find a sillier or happier dog than Mavis! Update 12/6: Mavis is currently in a 3-week board and train with our professional trainer! She is learning all of her smarts, including basic obedience, how to appropriately play with other dogs, and how to be the very best girl so she's ready for her forever home. Her training program will end after Christmas, and she is looking for a forever home by then! As an added bonus, her adopters will receive all three of her follow-up lessons with her trainer COMPLETELY FREE! Don't miss out on your chance to adopt a professionally trained little land hippo! Update from my foster 10/12: Mavis is doing great with house training, but she's still not perfect. She is good in her crate as long as she is in a room alone where she can't see people or dogs. I have started leaving the door open to her room a few hours a day so she can see us walking by and she is getting better at staying calm. She is quiet in her crate for 7 hours every night. It's pretty clear she has never been in a house before, so she is learning all her house manners that she never got the chance to learn as a puppy. She has a lot of energy that needs to be channeled into productive outlets or else she will get herself into trouble by chewing things that aren't meant to be chewed or getting into things she shouldn't! Mavis came into the overcrowded shelter after she was found as a stray. In the crowded, dark, noisy shelter, she quickly began deteriorating. She desperately tried to escape the kennel, leading to her scratching up her belly while trying to dig under the concrete floor. She then severely cut her lip and tongue on her cone after her spay surgery and was in a constant state of panic. It was clear this sweet little girl could not handle the stress of the shelter, so we got her into a foster home ASAP to begin decompressing and start looking for a forever home! Mavis is doing much better since getting out of the shelter environment. She is not panicked or trying to escape her crate and is in a much calmer headspace. So far, we've learned she loves playing with balls (she hasn't quite learned fetch yet) and is very treat motivated. Her foster often finds her carrying around her bully sticks, happy as can be! Since she's motivated by food she is very easy to train and eager to learn new things. She is still learning how to appropriately interact with other dogs. She gets very excited and overstimulated when she meets new dogs, so at this point she would do best as the only dog in the home. We have not seen her with cats or kids yet. Adoption Process
Our process will include the following components:
1. Checking your personal references. Please be sure to list two personal references that are not related to you.
2. If you do not own your place of residence we will need to call your landlord or leasing office.
3. Veterinarian reference. If you do not have any pets currently in the home, please list the veterinarian you used for any previous pets. We do require all pets in the home to be spayed/neutered.
