Lucky Dog Animal Rescue

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned animals, primarily dogs from high-kill shelters and owners who can no longer care for them. By working with committed volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and boarding facilities, we are able to rescue hundreds of animals every year, provide them with loving temporary care, and find them well-matched, carefully screened forever homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training, and good nutrition.

Meet Luke

Luke NEEDS A FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME!!!! Name:    Luke        Best Guess for Breed:   Labrador Retriever mix     Best Guess for Age:    3 years as of June 2025        SEX:    male   Approximate Weight:    49 lbs   Gets Along With:  Other dogs! We haven't seen him with cats or kids but we are happy to discuss integration techniques with any potential adopters!   Currently Living at:   South Carolina shelter! Luke needs a foster or forever home to come up to the DC area!   Special adoption considerations: Luke is a truly Lucky Dog. He tested positive for heartworms, but landed in a place where heartworm treatment is provided! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites. Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. Heartworm dogs can resume full active and normal lives, but need to be kept calm for 4-6 weeks after treatment. We are happy to discuss where in the treatment process this Lucky Dog is in right now! Just email the adoption coordinator - the address is at lower left!Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Luke would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.   Luke is Looking For:    Luke is a sweet and scruffy "sato"—a lovable street dog from Puerto Rico—who made his way to South Carolina on a rescue flight, ready to find his forever home. This island boy has come a long way, ready for belly rubs and biscuits. Despite his past, Luke’s spirit is full of joy and resilience. He adores his caretakers and showers them with affection—he’s just waiting for the chance to pour all that love into a family of his own. What do you say, can you provide Luke with a loving home and a chance to make new puppy friends?  What My Foster Says About Me:    We will update this once Luke has spent some time in foster care!    Lucky Dog cannot guarantee any dog is housebroken.  All of our dogs are working on their crate training.  TO ADOPT:    The adoption fee for this dog is $475, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment.  If you are interested in adopting, please complete the Adoption Questionnaire online at bit.ly/adoptaluckydog   Lucky Dog Animal Rescue does our best to provide accurate information about the dogs we have for adoption.
