Worthy Dog Rescue

Worthy Dog Rescue is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping dogs in distress, especially those living on chains, in pens, or in neglectful and abusive situations. Our mission is to provide a better life for these dogs, while working to address the root problems of animal overpopulation and improve animal welfare. We do this through community outreach and by supporting and educating dog owners in underserved communities, by sponsoring spay and neuter programs, and by rescuing and rehabilitating dogs in need.

Meet Rusty

Meet Rusty! This petite Bully GIRL (affectionately named by her foster dad) with pretty hazel eyes was found as a stray, running alongside a rural highway in SC, and was taken in by Animal Control. She most likely escaped a neglectful life as an outdoor dog. At only two years old, she tested positive for heartworm and has a prior front leg injury that impacts her gait a bit but doesn’t limit her at all. Rusty quickly proved to be a very social pup at the shelter and caught the eye of one of our foster moms, Laine, who stepped up to foster her. She has already been spayed and treated for heartworm and is ready to start her new life. Rusty has lived with Laine, Gary, and their pack of 4 pups and cat for the past month. She had an easy integration with her new pack and really enjoys the companionship of other dogs. She's afraid of the kitty. Her new bestie, Girl, is a young GSD mix and they love to play tug and chase each other around. Now that we’ve seen her in action, running in the yard and jumping a 4.5-foot baby gate, we can definitively say that Rusty is not held back by her prior injury. Laine describes Rusty’s personality as sweet and loving, but she’s a little timid at first. She took more time to warm up to Gary, but tasty treats and small adjustments have helped. Initially, when he came home from work carrying his coffee cup, Rusty was scared of him, so now he leaves it in the other room before he greets her. (We love Gary!) Rusty is starting to trust and learn that life can be good, and that home can be safe. She’s curious about all things new and wants to explore. Rusty is housetrained, crate trained, and is learning not to jump the baby gates — she’s smart and picks things up quickly. Laine typically crates her when she leaves home, and Rusty loves her toys, so as long as she has a few to entertain her, she has no issues in the crate. Laine has also left Rusty free in the home when she’s doing chores outside and she’s done fine with no mischief. Now that Rusty has been in her foster home for a few weeks and had time to build rapport and trust, Laine will start taking Rusty on local outings to the pet store and parks to see how she does in more social settings. Thus far, she’s been a very sweet, open pup who may be a little timid, but warms up when she knows you have good intentions. Updates to follow!  Coming to DC metro early to mid-May.
