Emmet County Animal Shelter

We live in a primarily rural area with a 50% poverty level and 40% non Caucasian/transient population. Due to the farmer mentality or disposable mentality of our area many pets find them selves homeless due to no fault of their own. We take in animals that are neglected, abandon, injured or just unwanted. We rehabilitate them and then re-home them through our adoption process. We have been solely foster based since 2010 and are currently building our new facility. We do it all with volunteers and we do it because we love it! The animals deserve better and we try our best to offer them that by doing what we can, when we can, the best we can, with what we have and with all our heart.

Meet Coco Roo

*** The first step in the adoption process is to complete the adoption application on our website at www.emmetcountyanimalshelter.org*** Calling all chihuahua lovers!!! This is Coco Roo!  Coco was in impound at a neighboring shelter and he wasn't doing well with all of the noise and chaos in the dog area.  He was scared, shut down and reactive.  We agreed to take him and we put him in quiet spot (with the cats!) at the shelter while we let him decompress and waited for an opening with a foster family.  While in our care we noticed that Coco seemed to be in pain so a trip to the vet determined he was suffering from an auto immune condition.  Medication quickly made him feel better and Coco began to come out of his shell and enjoy the attention of the crew at the shelter.  Once in foster we saw Coco really blossom!  He loved his foster family (he does prefer women) and really liked having other dogs and cats to play with.  His foster mom says he spends 80% of his day snuggled up sleeping and 20% of the day running around playing with the others usually with his little tongue hanging out. Coco loves a soft blanket to cozy up in like most chihuahuas and the only thing he still doesn't like is to be picked up although he will jump in your lap or climb a set of puppy stairs to get onto the couch or the bed. Because of his size and nature he is not a good fit for small children.  Coco Roo is neutered, up to date with vaccinations and microchipped.  His adoption fee is $150.00
