Meet HEDGIE

My name is Hedgie and I am a tricolor Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix. I am an intact male (I will be neutered before I am adopted) and I am 4 months old. I was transferred here from another shelter/rescue through the Ames Animal Shelter's Third Chance program on 05/24/2025. I am used to staying inside during the day and inside during the night. I am potty trained. I am a high energy dog and I will need an owner with some prior pet owning experience. The shelter staff is not sure if I am used to being crated during the day, and I am still learning to walk nicely on a leash. There are lots of things you can do to get me to walk comfortably and safely on a leash. The staff can tell you all about it! I would do well with some puppy obedience training to set me up for success. I do not have a history of trying to escape the home or yard, but the shelter staff always recommends owners be mindful that I do not accidentally get out a door or escape the yard. I would like a standard height fence to help keep me inside the yard. I can be good with other dogs and I can be good with cats. I can be good with men, women, and children. However, because I am a herding breed, I can sometimes try to herd children. So I would probably do best with older children who can be taught how to gently redirect that behavior.Herding breeds are a LOT of energy and VERY smart, but also very loyal. They need an owner who can dedicate a lot of time and energy to them. Researchers equate their intelligence to that of a 3-4 year old human child!
