Meet Lucy

Lucy is a Miniature Dachshund. She weighs approximately 8 lbs and is around 2 years old. Lucy came into Hope in early August after a stray hold from a vet clinic here in Iowa. She is beautiful, but very cautious and unsure of everything until she acclimates. She was adopted to a family a couple of weeks after coming into Hope and that did not work out for her as they reported she did not do well with their small dog and was very leary of men. She was returned to us in mid-October. Lucy is friendly but she takes a lot of time to warm up and will need a very patient adopter to give her lots of time to get comfortable. Lucy tends to trust females more than men and quicker. She does not like to be picked up from behind and will nip if she does not trust you or feels threatened. Once she trusts you she does better getting down at her level to pick her up. This appears to be a  fear based reaction and not aggression. She needs a home with no children 12 and under due to her fear based response. If having children is also in your future she will likely not be a good match for you. In early December she became scared and was able to get away from the foster mom she was staying with while taking her out to potty on a leash. . As of 12/6 she is in a foster home with a fenced yard and appears to get confidence from the bigger dogs when going out and back in to potty as well as observing interactions in the home. She remains a flight risk due to her level of caution. She is also okay with the cat in the home. She can be vocal at times especially when alerting of visitors, sounds, or just plain scared in the home environment.  This little girl needs someone to show her lots of love and patience while she adjusts. Which can frustrate humans, so please do not apply if anyone in your house gets frustrated or lacks demonstrating patience in challenging situations. She needs to be protected and allowed to adjust in her own time with small pushes once she has adjusted to her new home. She is house trained and is free roam when humans are home but is in kennel when they leave for short periods of time.  If you are interested in meeting Lucy, please complete an online application at https://hopeanimalrescueofiowa.duplie.com/forms/196/dog-application Adoption fee is $250 which includes spay/neuter, microchip, and age appropriate vaccines.
