Meet Kelso / Theo

Love the lab personality with a golden look? Theo has it all!Personality | Theo is a sweet and loving golden retriever/lab mix that loves to play. He'd be a great companion to someone who enjoys exploring the outdoors. He would make a great running buddy! Theo loves to be petted and will give very gently kisses when allowed. He is such a lover! He has a strong spirit and goofy personality that will serve him well with additional training. After playtime, Theo loves to cuddle up with you!Story | Found roaming the streets of Texas. Taken to local shelter by animal control. Other Dogs | Theo really likes other dogs. He's always encouraging his foster brother to play with him! He takes corrections from other dogs well when it's time to settle down. His foster brother really seems to enjoy his energy and loves zooming around the back yard in a game of chase or a tug of war session.  Cats | No cats in foster house. He seems like he would be good, but he does chase squirrels in the back yard.  Children | Fosters feel like he would love children! He's such a sweet dog. We imagine he will thrive in a family environment. Given his size and playful energy, we encourage supervision with little kiddos to make sure Theo doesn't knock them over Training | Theo is a blank slate with lots of potential for training! He will come most of the time, and is working on sitting like a good boy. Like most Labs, Theo will occassionally pick up and chew something that isn't his. Best to keep your shoes and belongings put away until he learns!   Theo is doing great with potty training. He knows to go outside to do his business. He's only had a few accidents since arriving. He has only been in the crate once and did great He laid down and did not cry or whine when alone in the crate. Even when fosters arrived home, he sat nicely waiting to be let out.  He has free access to roam at night, but is being let out once in the middle of the night just to prevent problems.  Leash | Theo is pretty good on leash and can pull a bit, but takes correction quite well. For a dog with little training he seems quite comfortable on leash.Activity Level | Theo is an energetic boy that would love an active adopter to take him on daily walks, runs or hikes. After exercise and love, he is happy to settle in and relax. Now and then he will howl a bit and let you know he is ready for action  Health Notes | Theo is heartworm positive, but treatment is very successful and completely manageable with all the proper education. MHLRM will cover the expense of treatment at one of our approved veterinarians. Heartworm positive dogs go on to live happy, normal lives after treatment and rarely experience long-term side effects. Don't let this stop you from adopting Theo!   He is also under treatment for Demodex, which is a non-contagious skin condition that should clear up over the next few months. He is missing a fair bit of fur right now, but hopefully that will fill in nicely as he heals.  General Notes | Want to adopt this dog?  Please do not email us.  Please fill out the Adoption Application ASAP.  Thank you! | Adoption Donations |  Our adoption donations are $475 for dogs 8 weeks to 1 year, $425 for 1-6 years, $375 for dogs 7-10 years, and $250 for 11+ years of age. Purebred dogs regardless of age are $525. These minimum donations help to defer the costs of initial vet care, food, and supplies while in foster care that currently average over $700 per dog).Meeting Dogs | Foster dogs may have meet & greets by appointment to approved applicants only.  To become an approved applicant - please complete the application process. Please know | Available dogs are updated as soon as possible and we do our best to keep it up-to-date, but occasionally dogs shown may become unavailable without notice due to a pending adoption. We encourage you to put in an application even if you don't see your new family member currently, as once you are approved, we can place you on the waiting list for first priority on the selection of the dogs we do bring in. That means you can often meet a dog upon transport arrival and adopt before they even make it to this page!We can not guarantee that a dog you wish to adopt is available by the time your adoption application is submitted, processed, and approved.  Your application is good for 90 days from the time of approval for any dog as long as it is a good fit for your family and your lifestyle.
