Meet Jefferson County / Penelope

Give a senior dog a second chance at life! Meet Penelope  Personality | Sweet as can be! Ms. Penelope is the most gentle and loving dog. Mellow girl who absolutely loves people.  Her foster has  a 3.5 year old daughter and whether she is watching tv, playing calmly on the floor, or having a sobbing meltdown, Penelope will try get as close to her as possible.  She has little bursts of excitement from time to time, like when it’s time to eat or when I first come home.  She loves balls and will occasionally play with stuffed toys. Story | Sweet Penelope was found wandering the streets. She was taken to the local shelter by animal control and no one ever came to claim her. It appears she was on the streets for awhile. Other Dogs | Great. Gets along great with the three dogs in her foster home. Cats | Unsure as the foster has no cats.Children | FriendlyTraining She sleeps quietly through the night on a dog bed, though clearly would prefer to be in your bed if allowed.  She is fully house trained and enjoys going for walks.  She is not leash reactive.  Leash | Gentle. She will walk nicely beside you unless there is someone to great. Then she will get excited and tug a little. Something you can easily work on!Activity Level | Medium-low. Penelope may be 10 years old but still has plenty of energy to go on a nice walk or play with a ball. She taps her little toes and wags her tail in excitement when you greet her. She'd make a great companion to an adopter looking for an easy-going, laid back dog.Health Notes | Penelope is heartworm positive, but treatment is very successful and completely manageable with all the proper education. MHLRM will cover the expense of treatment at one of our approved veterinarians. Heartworm positive dogs go on to live happy, normal lives after treatment and rarely experience long-term side effects. Don't let this stop you from adopting Penelope! Thank you! | Adoption Donations |  Our adoption donations are $475 for dogs 8 weeks to 1 year, $425 for 1-6 years, $375 for dogs 7-10 years, and $250 for 11+ years of age. Purebred dogs regardless of age are $525. These minimum donations help to defer the costs of initial vet care, food, and supplies while in foster care that currently average over $700 per dog).Meeting Dogs | Foster dogs may have meet & greets by appointment to approved applicants only.  To become an approved applicant - please complete the application process. Please know | Available dogs are updated as soon as possible and we do our best to keep it up-to-date, but occasionally dogs shown may become unavailable without notice due to a pending adoption. We encourage you to put in an application even if you don't see your new family member currently, as once you are approved, we can place you on the waiting list for first priority on the selection of the dogs we do bring in. That means you can often meet a dog upon transport arrival and adopt before they even make it to this page!We can not guarantee that a dog you wish to adopt is available by the time your adoption application is submitted, processed, and approved.  Your application is good for 90 days from the time of approval for any dog as long as it is a good fit for your family and your lifestyle.
