Doggie Protective Services

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization based in So. CA who has established chapters outside of the area to attempt to place more of the dogs that are dying in the shelters in So. CA. Many areas do not have small breed dogs and we transport and meet with potential adopters because So. CA is deluged in small breed dogs.

Meet French Toast

This dog will be at a meet and greet event on Saturday, April 6th at the Palo Alto Pet Food Express from 12-3pm, unless he/she is set up and adopted prior to the event. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption Fee: $1000   French Toast is a 2-3 year old Golden Retriever who is stuffed with whipped cream, love, and maple syrup! French Toast came to DPS with three other Goldens after being surrendered to the shelter. We have no idea how this gorgeous girl landed herself in the slammer but we scooped her out, took her to breakfast, and promised her the best new life ever! French Toast is a purebred Golden Retriever. Interested homes must be prepared to discuss their continued plan for grooming and training.    French Toast (Toasty) is the dictionary definition of a perfect Golden Retriever in just about every day! She adores her people, loves cuddles, carries her toys around like babies, and doles out kisses to anyone in her reach! Toasty’s favorite hobby is finding her toy of the day and wagging her entire body along with her tail as she shows off her prize to her people. When she sees you, she will immediately roll over on her back for hours of belly rubs! As much time as you have to love on her, she is there! Toasty is the perfect couch potato dog and would love to spend her days lounging around the house with her soft toys on her beds. She has mastered the art of finding the warmest nap spots and moves with the sunshine. As she is a little chunky, she does have some required movement time during the day, but she is up for it when she gets loving encouragement! Toasty’s dream forever home would be a family ready to spend their days with a big shadow carrying a toy around. As long as she has a yard, a mountain of treats and toys, and people willing to pet her, Toasty will fit right in!  Toasty wakes up at 7 AM and goes right outside into the backyard for potty before breakfast. She is a little chunky, so she eats separately from her foster sibling so she doesn’t snag some extra kibble. After she eats, she gets a 20 minute jaunt before she takes a long nap in the sunshine on the couch. During the day, Toasty shadows her foster people around the house as she soaks up any and all love they have to dole out. She gets a long walk in the late afternoon and loves to sniff around as she greets her neighborhood pals. After her afternoon walk, she heads to the backyard for some romping around before dinner at 6 PM. She winds down the day getting cuddles and kisses before heading to bed at 10 PM where she dreams of dancing pancakes and waffles!  Toasty cohabitates with the resident dog and would do well in a home with another dog. She does prefer the company of people though, so if you took her to the dog park she would 100% stick by the people for pets the entire time rather than zooming around with the dogs. Toasty walks very well on a leash but would benefit from continued training both to limit her pulling and to build up her stamina. Toasty is fully housetrained and takes herself out the doggy door when she needs to go potty. She is working on her separation anxiety, so a home ready to help her feel settled is necessary.  Our favorite thing about Toasty? When she decides she is done for the day, she will roll over and play dead, which is effective when you are a big girl! However, with some coaxing (and a few treats), she eventually goes along with what you need from her. Ah to be a spoiled dog who lounges around for pets and treats. What’s not to love? We couldn’t guess! Don’t delay and risk losing out on this sweet gal!    French Toast is only an option for homes with prior dog experience, especially those homes who have previously owned large breed dogs. Kids in the home should be over the age of 8.

Adoption Process
We require an application from anyone who is interested in adopting. Then we require a phone interview, followed by a meeting in person. Then if the animal is a match, we have a contract and our adoption fee which is $400.

Look for other dogs for adoption!
