Doggie Protective Services

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization based in So. CA who has established chapters outside of the area to attempt to place more of the dogs that are dying in the shelters in So. CA. Many areas do not have small breed dogs and we transport and meet with potential adopters because So. CA is deluged in small breed dogs.

Meet The Lorax

Adoption fee: $750 Meet The Lorax! This 2–3 year old Mal-Shih may weigh only 5 pounds, but he carries a heart full of love. He came to DPS as part of a group of ten little dogs rescued from living together in a vehicle. When they arrived, they were underweight, dirty, and in desperate need of care. Despite that rough start, The Lorax has shown nothing but resilience, sweetness, and a deep desire to be close to his people.   The Lorax’s current foster says the note on his crate when she picked up from the first foster said it best: “He loves to cuddle.” And it’s true— nothing makes him happier than being near his human. He’s the perfect mix of companion without being demanding. He’ll curl up right beside you on the couch, or snooze patiently in a dog bed nearby while you work, sneaking in little glances with his big, loving eyes. He even does a hilarious army crawl across the couch if he wants to inch closer.   He starts his day around 7am with a potty break and some gentle play with the resident puppy, then it’s breakfast (though he’s not a big eater right away). His days are a mix of relaxing, following his foster mom into the yard for potty reminders, and enjoying chew sticks or the occasional romp with his puppy friend. Dinner is at 5, followed by evening snuggles and a final potty before bedtime. He’s learning to trust the crate at night and usually sleeps quietly through until morning.   The Lorax gets along well with other dogs, both big personalities and laid-back types, and has shown himself to be respectful and adaptable. He hasn’t met cats or kids yet, but his gentle and affectionate nature suggests he’d do just fine with the right introductions.   While he’s more of a lounger than a high-energy pup, he’s also the kind of dog who will happily do whatever his family wants— whether that’s chilling through a Netflix marathon or tagging along for adventures. He’s good on leash, pretty quiet overall, and working on his potty training with steady progress.   The Lorax is also full of quirks that make him extra lovable— like his “zombie legs” that stick straight out when you pick him up, or his little grumbles when a 6 lb puppy interrupts his nap.   His dream home? A family who wants a devoted cuddle buddy to share the couch (and their hearts). The Lorax is easygoing, funny, and endlessly affectionate—everything you could hope for in a little companion.

Adoption Process
We require an application from anyone who is interested in adopting. Then we require a phone interview, followed by a meeting in person. Then if the animal is a match, we have a contract and our adoption fee which is $400.
