Doggie Protective Services

We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) animal rescue organization based in So. CA who has established chapters outside of the area to attempt to place more of the dogs that are dying in the shelters in So. CA. Many areas do not have small breed dogs and we transport and meet with potential adopters because So. CA is deluged in small breed dogs.

Meet Star Wars: Princess Leia

This dog will be at a meet and greet event on Saturday, April 22nd unless he/she is adopted prior to the event with a set up home. The event is from 12 pm to 3 pm at Palo Alto's Pet Food Express. Those interested in meeting the dog can come out to our meet and greet event. We no longer do application approval onsite. Anyone adopting has been previously approved and set up to meet prior to the event. Adoption fee: $550 The Star Wars puppies are a trio of 10 week old Lab-GSD type mixes who were found under a house by a Good Samaritan and brought to DPS. They've been with the rescue since they were just over four weeks old, so they're well socialized and used to being handled by humans. Here is the report from their foster home! The puppies each eat a cup of Nulo kibble at each mealtime. They sleep in the crate and can go 8 hours without an accident. They have been able to play outside a lot so they haven't had any accidents in the house. When left inside and not in the crate, they use the pee pad. They are comfortable with other dogs and warm up to strangers quickly. We are working on staying down when pet and not jumping. We just say "down" and pet them only when they are sitting. We are also working on the puppy biting so we say, "no bite" and either hold their mouth or put our hand in a fist and then when they lick instead we say something like "good kisses" or we give them a toy to bite instead and redirect them. They'll play for a few hours at a time and then come in for a nap in the late morning, midday, and afternoon based on my schedule.   These pups would be happiest in a home with a yard and lots of distractions like toys, other dogs, or people to play with them. They really want to please and are quick learners.   Luke Skywalker (M) is the most loving goofy boy you'll meet. He waddles up for pets and immediately rolls over for tummy rubs. He is the first to come when called and is quite humorous when he flops over his enormous feet. His soulful eyes will win your heart. He will let you know if he feels left out and whine sweetly for attention.   Padme Amidala (F) is little miss independent. She is happy to be pet and held but she doesn't crave it like her siblings. She will wander off to explore on her own often but is always good about coming when called. Her coat is sleek and beautiful. She seems self-possessed and more grown up than her siblings but she will happily get in the mix and play like the others. She likes getting toys and parading the yard with them in her mouth.   Princess Leia (F) is an even tempered gal who can wait patiently for her love but she is always next in line for the petting. She is now good at staying down for pets and is good at coming when called. She is pretty calm and loves playing with her siblings. She is incredibly trainable and smart! She is going to be a beautiful dog. The puppies are only an option for a home that has owned a dog in the last 5 years. Prior large breed dog experience is highly recommended. They are an option for kids over the age of 6 who are dog-savvy.

Adoption Process
We require an application from anyone who is interested in adopting. Then we require a phone interview, followed by a meeting in person. Then if the animal is a match, we have a contract and our adoption fee which is $400.

Look for other dogs for adoption!
