Meet SMOKEY

02/14/24 13:01Smokey is the ultimate sidekick. If you’re looking for an adventure buddy, couch potato, or new addition to a small household, he’s your guy. Smokey is housetrained, great on a leash, crate-trained, curious, smart, and with a little creativity, and will love you forever if you play fetch with him. Smokey is deaf but has quickly learned training like “sit”, “stay”, “lay down” through hand signals. He is 9 years old and in his prime, able to quickly adapt to your lifestyle and routines.Smokey is a German Shepherd who has had previous ear infections that have left him deaf but this has not slowed him down or dampened his spirits in the slightest. Smokey is 85 lbs and still believes he’s a lap dog, if you’re looking for someone who wants to snuggle up, he will gladly crawl right into your lap if you let him. Smokey has been fostered with two smaller dogs and gets along with them very well, his ideal situation is one where he’s the center of your attention, but he will adapt quickly to your pack if you already have pets in your home!Smokey is currently living at home with a foster but is waiting to meet you through the San Jose Animal Care Center! Feel free to email [email protected] to schedule a meet and greet.1/11/24SVPP Dog Day Out Notes:Today I: Went with new friends to a big place that had lots of sidewalks and stores and people and some dogs. I got to have a yummy Pup Cup snack, and I got to ride an elevator and look out a very high window, which was so fun! Riding in the car was also very fun, I loved looking out the window, and on the way back I took a little nap.Three Words to Describe Me are: Happy – Stoic - EnthusiasticNotes from My Walker: Smokey is such a sweet boy! He is incredibly friendly and happy, especially considering the awful state of his ears. While he seems to have some mobility decline, he still loves to go for walks and he even likes to jump up for hugs! He LOVED his Pup Cup and was very enthusiastic finishing every drop! He was a bit reactive to dogs that we saw at Santana Row, but was pretty easy to redirect and move away. With people he was extremely friendly and very sweet! While walking he checked in regularly and gave little nose touches to let us know he was thinking of us ?We were a bit concerned getting him in the car would be a challenge, but he was more than happy to scramble in! Once in the car he seatbelted easily and then offered to sit up front with us – he quickly realized that the back seat had much better snacks! On the way home he looked out the windows and then took a short nap. Smokey deserves and needs to get out of the shelter. SVPP would love to bring him into our program. We just need a loving foster home.12/12/23 19:05Smokey - A0962002Meet Smokey, the gentle soul with a heart as big as his fluffy ears! This sweet senior shepherd has found himself in the shelter, a place that doesn't quite match the warmth he deserves in his golden years. Age is merely a number for Smokey - he's still eager for treats, walks, and a game of fetch! Come meet him and watch him happily bounce over to fetch the ball and then drop it at your feet, ready for another round. Smokey is still a strong boy on the leash and vocally expresses his excitement to meet other dogs. He had a lovely introduction with a friendly female shepherd at the shelter. Have a resident dog? Come bring them for a meet and greet!Smokey is facing a tough battle with serious medical issues in his ears, as you can see from the shelter notes. Will you be the hero Smokey needs? Can you open your heart and home to this charming senior, giving him the love he craves in his twilight years?10/24/23 15:31Reason animal needs rescue: Recurrent severe otitis externa and excoriations under ears.
