We are a small group of people who originally formed the 501(C)3 in 1999. We are retired to this area from other places and have professional backgrounds. Our President is a retired Air Force Colonel who was a nurse. She and others saw a real need in this rural community for someone to help educate the people on how to better care for animals and the need to spay and neuter and decided to build a shelter and start housing the unwanted animals of Stone County. I have been actively involved since 2008. Our shelter dream was finally a reality when we were given a wonderful gift from a local person who died and left an estate trust to us that will be disbursed over a 12 year period. We were able to secure a bank loan to build the shelter based on the annual disbursements from this estate trust and it was completed in August. We believe that all animals should be properly cared for and loved and not tied up in a yard or left out in weather with not shelter or used for breeding. We have conducted several small size rescues in the area over the years with the help of the local authorities and helped stop one hoarder who had 200 dogs at one time and could not care for them. The ASPCA was called in to help with this issue. We can only house about 20 t o 25 dogs and the same number of cats at any one time. We do not have a viable foster program to help take in more unwanted animals. We work from a wait list and take animals that are in danger sooner than ones that are being cared for by someone. Last year in 2016 we adopted out 128 dogs and transported 37 dogs to another rescue in Colorado that we work with that takes our dogs or puppies that we do not have room to keep. This shelter has a facility as well as a large foster program to house the dogs till they are adopted out by them. We took in a total of 170 dogs and returned 38 to owners who had lost dogs. We adopted out 59 cats, had 68 cats surrendered and spayed and neutered 249 animals.

Meet Jax

Jax is a very BIG teddy bear.  He has a very gentle, loving nature.  He was adopted from the shelter 6 years ago and returned to the shelter because the family was moving and couldn't take him with them.  He was confined to a small outside pen before he came here and did not get much exercise. He was about 20 lbs overweight when we got him and has lost 12lbs already! He is 8 years old and now weighs 105 lbs. Jax's age and size do not slow this guy down at all...he is go go go! He LOVES walks, adventure and being with people. He gets very excited about everything and acts like a puppy. He would be a wonderful adventure buddy for an active family or person. He is house trained, good with other dogs and kids too.  Jax would make a great addition to any dog loving home!  If you would like more information, please contact the shelter at 870-269-5200 or go to our website at schspets.org and complete an adoption application and someone will contact you for a meet and greet.  UPDATE:  Jax just entered the Paws in Prison Program for 4-8 weeks of obedience training.  He will be house trained, leash trained, crate trained and will learn tricks too.  Who says an Old Dog cant learn new tricks.  

Adoption Process
We have an adoption application that can be found on our website and sent to our email or people call or inquire through adopt-a pet and petfinder where all our animals are posted and our FB page we call Stone County Humane Society Adoptions Available. It is a group page we use to find owners of lost pets as well as post our animals ready for adoption. Our normal FB page got hacked a few years ago and I have never set one up again. Our adoption fees are $100 for dogs and $50 for cats, and $150 for a trained dog through a local Paws in Prison training program we participate in every 8 weeks we send 2 dogs to be trained and adopted through this program. Our adoption fees include spay/neuter, rabies shots, 2 cat/dog shots and more for puppies, 4DXPlus Idexx Snap test for heartworm, ehrlichia, lime and one other disease, and worm medicine. We ask for vet references and get all the information we can to determine if a person can adopt an animal from SCHS.
