Adopt-A-Stray

We are a few dedicated individuals who have formed Adopt-A-Stray in order to save many adoptable pets that would otherwise be euthanized in the shelters in our area. We routinely pull dogs and cats from the euthanasia list, as well as take in strays and owner surrenders as space allows.

Meet Beatrice

3/10/24  Beatrice (AKA Bea, AKA Mrs. Bea, AKA The Beaster) Beatrice is a purebred English Bulldog looking for a loving home where she can be the queen of her domain. Mrs. Bea was adopted out to a family last year who had adopted two bulldogs previously from AASR, and, unfortunately, Bea has shown her strong preference to live her life free of other dogs. Prior to coming to AASR last year, Bea was a breeder mom and has had at least one litter of puppies. Since being adopted out, Bea has learned what being a carefree pet is all about, and she is ready to show her next family what an easygoing, low energy, goofy, and sweet chonk she is. Some facts about Bea: Breed: English Bulldog Age: 4 (born Oct 2019) Weight: 54 lb Spayed Good with Dogs? Nope. Nope. Nope. Good with Cats? Unknown but would probably pay them no mind. She’s met a neighborhood cat and was curious but didn’t chase. Good with Kids? Unknown, but Bea would likely be fantastic with older kids. Due to her size and having no idea how to cuddle in any way that is remotely comfortable or normal (more on that below), she may not be a good couch companion to smaller children. Favorite past times: eating, sleeping, snoring, and chewing on toys. Car riding: Bea LOVES a short car ride for a pup cup or McDonald’s ice cream. To keep her safe, she must be lifted in and out of the car. Manners: Bea is the best dog. Her family says that she is the easiest dog they’ve ever had (minus the inability to get along with other dogs). Walks: Bea likes to walk on her own terms. She doesn’t understand the concept of walking more than once a day, so don’t expect an exercise partner. While Bea gets excited to see her leash and harness and waddles to the front door, she can also quickly lose interest. And when she does, she will stop completely frozen until you turn around and walk home. Sometimes this is a block from home, other times you haven’t even left the driveway. House training: 100% housetrained. Bea is AMAZING and has had almost zero accidents. She loves her potty routine (breakfast, mid-day, dinner, before bed). In the off chance she needs out at another time, Bea will stand by the door. Couch behavior: Bea loves to spend some time on the couch but can’t get up (or down safely) by herself. She likes to be next to her humans, buuuuut, she is also a very awkward cuddler. She spends her couch time plotting how to get to the humans’ ears that she so desperately wants to nibble, and she attempts (very unsuccessfully) to get to those ears. She puts all her energy and strength into this, which likely wouldn’t be great for small kids. Stairs: Bea is obsessed with taking herself upstairs, even when no one asked her to. She does fine going up but can sometimes get intimidated coming down if anything is out of place or the lighting is poor. Health and maintenance: Because Bea is a purebred English Bulldog, she does require a few things to keep her in tip-top health. -Occasionally needs her paw pads trimmed of overgrown keratin; she is very tolerant of this and nail trims. -Needs nose wrinkle and tail pocket cleaned with wipes and wiped dry every day or two. -Needs her ears wiped clean weekly to help prevent ear infections. -Takes over-the counter joint chews. -Takes Thyro-Tabs for low thyroid. This only costs about $2/month. Bea’s current family will send her with a supply of the wipes, joint chews, and 2+ months’ worth of Thyro-Tabs to get her started in her new home. Beatrice is currently located in Roanoke, Virginia, but transportation to the northeast/New England is a possibility.
