Helping Shepherds of Every Color

We are Helping Shepherds of Every Color. We do not discriminate against white or other non acceptable GSD colors. We saw a need to help out GSDs, there are so many out there so we jumped in to help. Also since so many GSDs I have helped in the past were from the Humane Society of Elmore County, we can jokingly be referred to as Helping Shepherds of Elmore County

Meet Jett (FKA Angus)

All of our dogs are housed in private homes, we do not have a store or a shelter.  We do not show dogs to interested parties until they have an approved adoption application.  If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please fill out an adoption application on our website www.helpingshepherdsofeverycolor.com/adoption-application  You may also find us on facebook:  Helping Shepherds of Every Color Rescue. Jett is an amazing and loving solid black GSD. He was abandoned overnight outside of a shelter in an airline crate. He was pulled by a shepherd rescue and placed with a potential adopter within 2 weeks. Jett has been living as a member of this family for 8 weeks. However, the adopter also has 6 indoor cats. The cats have been separated from him, though visible through the door. While Jett has shown no aggression towards the cats, he does delight in chasing squirrels and other outdoor critters in the back yard. The wildlife on his leashed walks is also very interesting! The adopter, with much regret, has come to recognize sharing a home with six cats is the wrong decision for both Jett and the cats. Personality Traits: Housebroken – rings bell on doorknob to go out. Though sometimes that is to play! Other Dogs – he has demonstrated sociable behavior towards short term kennel mate and neighbor dog who occasionally comes to fence. There has been no other exposure except group obedience training. It was too early in his rescue for that effort – he was overwhelmed. Cats: He did pass the cat test at the shelter, but in hindsight believe he may have been shut down due to shock of abandonment. Favorite Pastimes: Jett LOVES ball – balls he can carry in his mouth and jolly balls he can fling about gleefully. He also enjoys walks in the woods. Companion: Jett loves his person. The term Velcro Dog is fitting. However, he is content in the back yard when necessary. He does not challenge the fence. Potential: Beloved pet; worth assessment for search and rescue.       Health: Neutered and up-to-date on all shots except his second flu vaccine. He is HW negative and on preventative. Microchipped: currently registered with original rescue Cars: Loves car rides, though will need training. He also loves to bark at passing cars. Training Needs: Jett is wicked smart and has a strong desire to please. His training is in process: Crate – he sleeps in a crate in the adopter’s room (along with the six cats). However, cannot say is crate trained if in another room or alone in home. Jett is young and clearly had little behavior training before coming to rescue. He does jump and can be mouthy, though improving quickly. He has a “sit.” Working on “stay.” However, he does “settle” when asked. And sometimes on his own in hopes of a treat or praise. Has had some clicker training. He also understands “leave it” – so the outside toys stay outside! Adopter took Jett to group training. At this point responds far better to one-on-one training. As typical of a GSD, he has attached himself to his person. While very receptive to visitors initially, over a period of 3-4 weeks, Jett began to exhibit the “stranger danger” response. He was assessed by an experienced trainer who does not think Jett is aggressive, rather protective or fearful. At the trainer’s suggestion, Jett has been introduced to a prong collar and doing very well with this tool. He is also being introduced to a basket muzzle in the event one is necessary. The trainer did not think an E-collar would be necessary or effective for Jett. Ideal Home: Jett Noir would thrive in a home where he would receive attention and companionship. He needs time to decompress and acclimate to a kind and loving environment. He would also enjoy a job, perhaps Search and Rescue or as a frisbee boy! He will require a home with an experienced GSD owner who loves and understands the breed and is eager to train him to his potential. Would not recommend a home with small children and would be very cautious about cats or other small pets.
