Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County

The Almost Home Pet Adoption Center is a no-kill facility owned and operated by the Humane Society/SPCA of Nelson County. It is located at the intersection of Rt. 29 North and Stagebridge Road (Rt. 624) , just two miles north of Lovingston. Presently the facility is open daily from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M. The Adoption Center houses dogs and cats. The dogs are contained in individual rooms, one or two to a room, with wall murals painted by area artists and hemi-sync music from a sound system donated by the Monroe Institute. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in the rooms getting acquainted with the dogs and cats prior to adoption. Cats and kittens are housed in colorful cat condos with handcrafted furniture for climbing and perching.Adoption fees cover the cost of vaccinations, worming, heartworm test or feline leukemia/aids test and spaying/neutering. All adult animals are provided these veterinary services prior to adoption. Kittens and puppies are adopted out with neutering certificates covering the cost of these veterinary services at the appropriate age. Many of the animals come from unclaimed or surrendered animals at the Nelson County Animal Control Facility. These animals have been judged to be adoptable based on temperament and looks. The Center does accept animals being surrendered by Nelson residents on a space available and adoptability basis. I am a volunteer. Among other things, I take photos of animals and post them on the internet for exposure to the public. Website: http://www.nelsonspca.org/index.htm

Meet Candy

Spayed female Calico with white nose. How can you resist a look like that? A soft, welcoming face and delicious vanilla, fudge, and caramel markings.Candy enjoyed several months in a home where she loved to snuggle on her foster mom’s bed and explore the house. Much as her foster mom loved her, she could not keep her because the long-time resident cat objected to the new feline competition. Here are the top ten things Candy wants you to know:1. Greetings Are Grand: Candy will greet you every time you enter her room.2. Proximity Is Cool: She loves to sit next to you3. Playing Is Oh-So Fun: Candy’s favorite games include the laser light and ribbons bobbing around on the end of a wand. However, she doesn’t have much use for toy balls or fake mice. Live creatures like ladybugs are lots of fun, so she can help with pest control.4. Petting Preferences Vary: She thinks petting is good. That is until it’s not. In other words, she’s a typical feline who has mixed feelings.5. Eating Is Social (and Yummy): You can bribe Candy. Find some canned food, and you have the key to her heart. She even wants you to sit close by while she eats. After all, eating should be a social occasion.6. Blankets Are Luxurious: Another luxury she enjoys is a blanket to sleep underneath.7. Peace and Quiet: She prefers a quiet, peaceful environment — no boisterous, fast-moving children, please.8. Cleanliness Is a Virtue: Candy has some pride — she keeps herself clean and uses the litter box well.9. Carriers Should Be Banned: She prefers not to get into the carrier to go to the vet, so will make it challenging for you without resorting to aggressive tactics such as biting.10. Animals Are OK: Candy will likely get along with other animals as long as they are not aggressive. Come to meet Candy and fall in love.
