Second Chance Companions

We are an all-volunteer organization, started in 1993 dedicated to helping animals in SW Washington and the Portland Metro area. We have a small number of foster homes that take in dogs/cats (and sometimes other small animals) and no central facility, but we also work as a referral service for private owners who are looking for homes for their pets (we do the screening for them and also provide education to try to encourage them to keep their pets, when possible). We have a low-cost spay/neuter program for the public to try to try to curb pet overpopulation. We also work with our local Meals on Wheels program to provide pet food to Meals on Wheels recipients, individuals in assisted living and senior facilities, and area food banks. When we have the funds, we also provide emergency medical assistance to individuals.

Meet Merle

As you can see Merle is a very handsome young man. His markings are interesting -- he is considered a ticked tabby. He is full of life and such fun to have around. Merle has one speed and that is full out running -- perhaps he never learned how to walk :). He speeds around his foster house running up and down stairs and then thunders into his tunnel and skids out the other end. He is also as affectionate as he is active. He loves toys and most anything will do -- he is not picky. Bathtubs are another favorite and he is not picky on those either. Whichever bathroom you are in you will have a buddy rolling around and chatting with you. Merle is quite the talker and frequently initiates "conversations". Merle is not a great fan of canned food but LOVES chicken breast -- nothing but the best of course :) Merle is not only handsome but he is special in another way. He was born to a young Mom who was unfortunately not very healthy. He and his brothers got sick as well and Merle is the only one who survived. He has been given a clean bill of health by the vet but because of this he must be the only cat to avoid any heartache with passing something along to the other cat(s).This was written by his foster Mom and I can honestly say it is going to be so hard to adopt him out......but we have recently retired and want to do some traveling otherwise I would keep him in a heartbeat.
