Friends of Jackson County Animal Shelter Pets

Who We Are:A group of volunteers in Jackson County, MS dedicated to the mission of saving animal’s lives at the Jackson County Animal Shelter. We are a 501c3 Non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Mississippi. Mission Statement:• To assist Jackson County Animal Shelter with funds, food, supplies, shelter improvements, fostering and volunteerism.• To assist Jackson County Animal Shelter in securing good, reliable adoptive families for animals through social networking, transport to other states and local adoption events. • To educate the public on the importance of spay and neuter laws, animal protection laws and pet owner responsibility. How You Can Help:We always need responsible foster families; we cannot pull animals from the local shelter unless we have safe, reliable foster homes for them to go to for training, medications, spay and neuter hold and quarantine for transports. We work in conjunction with local and out of state Rescue organizations to save as many animals as possible through this fostering, adoption and transport program.Financially, we need funds for supplies, vet care and medicines, shelter pull fees and subsidizing transports to other states. Future projects include possible upgrades to the shelter to help reduce the spread of disease, increase animal capacity and thereby reduce euthanasia rates. We are also working on how to implement and fund low cost spay and neuter programs, micro-chipping, an adoption sponsorship fund and other life saving ideas. Meet Tess

Tess came into foster care as an orphan with her sister Tilly.  She was just over a week old,  and both girls were in rough shape, and needed a lot of TLC.   Fortunately, they were both adopted by Tallulah, a nursing momma cat who was also in foster care with her own babies.  Once in foster care, Tess began to thrive.  Today, she is active and energetic with a charming personality that's the perfect "tortitude" mix of slightly sassy,  a bit spunky, and a whole lotta sweet. Tess was raised as part of a big kitty family and she has always been the honorary big sister of the bunch.  She is lively, fairly confident and inquisitive, and is an intelligent kitten who thrives on mental enrichment, so she  is currently learning to sit and give high fives.  She's not one to rush into trouble, and is generally very well behaved if she's not bored. She can be very sweet and loving with her people, but she also loves spending time with her siblings, and is often not far from her sister Tilly, especially at nap time. She adores treats and snacks, especially Churu's and Delectables, and she has a very healthy appetite for both food and fun.  She is usually the first one to show up for meal times, and she can smell snacks and treats from a mile away!  If she’s hungry - she has no problem reminding you that it’s meal or snack time!  And if she thinks you have food - she’s liable to try to climb your leg to investigate whatever you may be snacking on without her.  Her love of food has also given her champion counter cruising skills, so she needs to have a home mindful of what is left out on the countertops!    Her favorite toys are plastic springs, catnip mice, laser lights, and dangling strings. Since Tess has always been a part of a big family, she has never truly been alone before. She protests loudly on the rare occasions when she has had to be by herself, so she can be vocal when she's not happy.   She was raised with big friendly playful dogs, but she still hisses and spats at them on the rare occasions when they sneak up on her or catch her by surprise.  Otherwise - she is friendly to the dogs.  Since she is pretty social but a bit independent too, she'd do best in a home where she's not by herself all the time, but where she can still have her own personal space.  She would likely do well as an only cat, as a part of a pair, or with other pets, but she would probably be happiest in a home with another kitty sibling or two.  Since she occasionally  likes to climb people like they are trees (and her claws can scratch when she does this) - she may not be the best fit for individuals with sensitive skin, or  who cannot physically tolerate this behavior until she outgrows this tendency.   Tess is a gorgeous dark tortoiseshell Domestic Shorthair, and as of January 2025, is 8 months old.
