Underdog Rescue MN

Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “Underdogs”Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a “Pit Bull” from Minneapolis Animal Control. While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the “anti-pitbull” policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other “bully-breeds” through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.Shannon’s dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.

Meet Arrietty

Hi! I'm Arrietty, a playful, social, and friendly young lady.  My FAVORITE thing ever is to PLAY! I love to chase glitter pom poms, ear plugs, erasers, bugs, and anything small all over the house.  If I found a family who could play with me and cuddle me a LOT, I could go to a home without another cat. But I like cats and really appreciate having feline friends to groom, cuddle, and chase.  I've even won over the old man cats in my foster home.   I'm named for Arrietty, the main character of the Borrower books who was always in search of a safe home, because when I was a street cat, I kept trying to sneak into houses.  Now that I've gotten indoors, I like to stay indoors! I do like to have a perch where I can look out a window, though.  It's too bad I can't speak people language, because I know everything that's happening in the neighborhood.  I like strangers and would make a great shop cat.  I have not met a dog yet, but am not easily spooked and probably would get used to a respectful dog quickly.   One of my favorite hobbies is hiding in my foster mom's room while she gets ready for bed, so I can sneak snuggle her.  My cardinal rule is that nobody naps alone.  Another hobby is hiding my favorite toys in blankets and furniture.  Every night we have Zoomie Hour.  (Sometimes its more like....Zoomie Four Hours). One other thing I like is food.  I am learning table manners but sometimes need to be reminded to leave my family's dinner alone. They have hidden the garbage cans so I can't help myself to midnight snacks anymore.  Treats have helped me learn that toenail trims and brushing can be fun. I'm still learning to keep my claws retracted when playing with the humans, but I'm getting better at it! When I came into rescue, I had a belly full of surprise babies!  I loved playing with my two kittens, but they got adopted and now I'm ready to find my very own forever home.  Being pregnant in a new house wasn't fun, and I showed my unhappiness a few times by peeing outside my litterbox. Things have gotten better since then and I am very consistent about the litterbox now. If you have a window, some treats, and time to play with me - please put in an application! I'd love to make your home mine. *indoor cat only* Please fill out a Feline application here: https://underdogrescuemn.com/adoption-applications/feline-adoption-application/ ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***

Adoption Process
Our process for adoption is: 1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application. 2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in. 3. The foster volunteer coordinates a “meet and greet” with you and any other members of your household. 4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
