Underdog Rescue MN

Underdog Rescue and Placement was founded in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie. Having volunteered for several other animal rescue organizations, Shannon saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “Underdogs”Our very first rescues included a pair of black kittens named Fenway & Wrigley, a pitbull puppy named Lucy and a tiny Toy Poodle named Lily (who was suffering from a head injury). No other rescue groups would take Fenway or Wrigley because black kittens are often overlooked by potential adopters, and, up until the time we rescued Lucy, rescue groups had not been allowed to rescue any dog considered to be a “Pit Bull” from Minneapolis Animal Control. While in law school, Shannon McKenzie had the “anti-pitbull” policy changed, with the assistance of Attorney, Marshall Tannick. Underdog Rescue continues to successfully rescue and place pitbulls and other “bully-breeds” through a continued partnership with Minneapolis Animal Control.Shannon’s dedication to the Underdog also extends to puppy mill survivors. Dogs that survive life in a puppy mill often come with a different set of challenges. They may require additional medical care, socialization and teaching of basic dog skills even though some may be adults. Our volunteers understand this and welcome these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like.

Meet Anjelica Rose

DOB: 6/1/2012 Requires another dog in home: Yes, while she may not interact a role model for confidence would be good.  Weight: 20 pounds Okay with dogs of all sizes: Yes Okay with cats: Unknown Okay with children under 12 years old: No Requires a fenced yard: Yes Note: dogs must always be leashed whenever outside of a contained area Well hello there! My name is Anjelica  and I am a very sweet, very curious 20lb Shiba Inu senior lady. I am still quite shy and prefer to have several den-like places to quietly observe the humans in the room from. I’m a fan of open kennels or cozy a spot under a piece of furniture so that I can watch you from a safe distance. Food generally coaxes some bravery out of me and my favorites are freeze-dried snacks, meaty treats and cheese. When I am feeling good and ready with the help of some snacks, I will venture out and relax in a dog bed close to my humans. I am still working on my potty training and do well on a schedule of being let out every 3-4 hours. I do have accidents if my humans are gone too long though, so my new family will need to continue patiently working on this with me. I’m not a fan of going potty on a leash, so I will need a fenced in yard in my new home. I do like to go for walks though and my foster mom says that I do well on my leash. I am crate trained and prefer to sleep in my crate at night, but I do not like to be left in a closed crate during the day and will try my best to escape. Can you blame me though? So far I like the other pups I’ve met, but I don’t like it if they are overly playful and all up in my business. I do gain some confidence by watching other pups though, so I may do well in a home with a calm canine brother or sister as long as my family is home often to continue working with me on my confidence. Too much commotion scares and overwhelms me, so I would do best in a home without small children. My foster mom says that I am very sweet and a curious watcher. I like to be in the room with my people as long as it’s a zen zone. The best family for me will allow me the space I prefer to just be a chill little senior lady. I may not be the snuggliest pup, but I do love to go for walks and truly enjoy my humans’ companionship. If you’re an old soul like me who’s looking for a great hang-out and leisurely stroll pal, I’m your gal! Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders.  Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit.  Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home.    ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there***

Adoption Process
Our process for adoption is: 1. Potential applicant searches our available dogs and/or cats listings and completes an adoption application. 2. Our staff reviews the application and puts you in contact with the foster volunteer of the pet your interested in. 3. The foster volunteer coordinates a “meet and greet” with you and any other members of your household. 4. If the foster and adopter agree the pet is a good fit, a home visit will be scheduled. Upon completion of a successful home visit, you will complete and sign our adoption contract, pay the fee, and take home your new pet!
