Meet Dougan

_________ B I O ______________  Name: Dougan Size:  ~Large range: 61-100 lbs  Adoption Donation: $75 (applicable sales tax included). Adoption fees may be paid by cash or check.   Other:  Neutered Male, Vaccinations current, Microchip, Best with no pets  *  Dougan has some bridging spondylosis in his lower back, specifically between vertebrae L3-L4. Spondylosis in dogs is a degenerative condition that usually occurs mainly along the spine in older dogs. There, degenerative disks cause bone spurs to develop. These bone spurs can form bridges from one vertebra to the next, limiting flexibility and range of motion. It is also important that Dougan be kept at a healthy weight. You may notice intermittent lameness and scuffing of his rear feet with this condition. This is related to nerve impingement/pinching.   Dougan is in search of a wonderful forever home!   Foster Home Feedback  2/11/2024 Foster Feedback: We have had the pleasure of hosting Dougan for over a year now. He is a good boy who prefers to be the only pet in the house, but is not reactive to other dogs when he sees them on walks. Doogie has spondylosis, which causes weakness in his hindquarter and his back legs kind of “trip” on each other when he walks. Because of this, we try to limit his sidewalk time, to avoid the sores he gets from his hind feet dragging on the cement. Instead, we walk him in the backyard or park, to allow for some exercise without damaging his feet. We “escort” Dougan each time he goes outside - for exercise or potty breaks - because he needs help to get up and down our few steps safely. There are times we use a sling to help him, but other times, he is able to navigate with us at his side, if he takes his time. Dougan is potty trained and trustworthy enough that we don’t kennel him when we’re away from home. He is calm with visitors after an initial greeting at the door, and he loves tagging along with kids playing at the park. Doogie is a sweetheart! 12/27/2022 Foster Feedback: Christmas is almost here and sweet Dougan is calmly waiting for that permanent couch, blanket and pillow at his very own forever home!   He is sooooo very easy and lovable and gives just the tiniest of kisses when I ask him. He is low energy, loves all ages of people and is non reactive to other dogs.  Everyone who meets him falls in love!   We both wish you and yours Happy Holidays!! 11/10/22 Foster Feedback: My goodness, what fun hosting Mr. Dougan the last few weeks has been. He’s an extremely well-behaved gentleman, quiet, greets strangers calmly and so friendly is a good eater and rides nicely in the car as we run short errands.  And boy is he a handsome dude with his stocky body, huge head, chest, and his cute saggy walrus cheeks!  All that on short legs so he stands knee-high….you’ll never have to worry about counter-surfing with him!! Doogie loves to wander around our backyard checking things out in the garden and behind bushes or just rolling around in the grass. If a squirrel shows up, he moves those short legs pretty fast to shoo it away!  Doogie suffers from Spondylosis and his back legs are a bit weak so we are only doing short walks and trying to find a field where he can walk on the grass so his back paws don’t get scuffed from concrete. He walks sedately, but can actually run quite well as he uses both back legs together.  Doogie is still playful and will throw his favorite squeaky ball around and chase it by himself. On an excursion to Scheels, he actually picked up and carried that ball all thru the store!   Although Dougan would definitely live his best life as an only pet, he is non-reactive to seeing other dogs on leash, so I think he could do well in just the right apartment setting. A ranch-type house with some non-slippery floors would be ideal for Doogie. We have an older two-story with steep stairs to the bedrooms and he can get up ok on his own, but I assist him in coming down. He sleeps on the floor in a comfy dog bed here, but would be thrilled to share your bed!  He is not an early riser…happy to sleep in as long as you do! My husband and I are retired and he is absolutely perfect for us. We have grandkids who visit and he LOVES kids!  We absolutely adore this sweet guy and hope there is a forever person for him to lay his big head on and watch tv together this winter.  11/4/21 Foster Feedback: Mr. Dougan (lovingly referred to as Doogie) is a handsome 3-year-old gentleman who arrived from out of state a few months ago. He is loving the Minnesota weather and really enjoys time outdoors. Although Dougan needs all the attention and love of his people at home, he likes to take short walks around the neighborhood so everyone can love on him. He would be the ideal only dog for someone who enjoys leisurely walks. While his forever home must have only adults and no children due to keeping doors secure, he loves playing with the neighborhood kids. He loves to fetch balls and actually returns them to you. Dougan's short legs can run pretty fast too. He finds squeaky toys a delight! Doogie loves to chew on toys and bones but doesn’t chew things he shouldn’t.  He thoroughly enjoys his downtime and loves to be in the same room as his “person”.  Dougan loves to rest his head on your lap and enjoys having his ears rubbed!  He oftentimes will be found playing by himself, tossing a toy up in the air, or a few feet across the room, and chasing after it; he knows that you can’t be attending to him all of the time. Dougan is potty trained and while he did fine with a crate, he has been a “bed-sleeper” since arriving at his foster’s house because he’s such a good sleeper! He can be left out of a kennel when not supervised during the day. He has yet to meet a person that hasn’t fallen in love with him! 10/5/21 Foster Feedback: Dougan enjoys chasing tennis balls and does really well returning with it. He allows you to retrieve it from his mouth for the next toss.  We are still working on the “drop” command so I don’t have to fish it out of his mouth, but he does do well with that too. Dougan tends to do his business on the run, so you have to pay attention when on walks to ensure he doesn’t leave any “treasures” behind on the sidewalk.  Dougan continues to be one of the sweetest dogs I have fostered!  9/21/21 Foster Feedback: Dougan is such a gentle and loving dog.  He loves the outdoors and enjoys his daily walks!  He is such a good listener.  Dougan is a great sleeper, especially if he can curl up next to you at night, complete with a good belly rub to send him off to doggie dreamland.  He makes a variety of noises that will have you chuckling throughout the day.  He has a deep, scary-sounding bark, but he is really such a sweet dog! Oh, and Dougan loves to drink out of the hose!! 7/27/21 Volunteer Feedback: I had the pleasure of taking Dougan on a kennel break from our facility over the past weekend.  He was the perfect house guest!  Dougan is potty trained - he did not have one accident while he was with us. He didn't "queue" when he needed to go outside, but he adapted to our schedule as if he had been here his whole life. When I would say, "should we go potty?" he would run to the door and patiently wait to go outside.   Dougan is also kennel trained. He slept in a kennel at night and also spent a few hours in the kennel during the day while I ran errands.  He went into the kennel willingly, didn't make a peep, kept it clean, and did not rip up the blankets/bed.  He loves to ride in the car. He is a very good passenger; doesn't jump around and isn't nervous/anxious.  I let Dugan sit in my front seat and he did great, I also had him in the cargo area of my SUV and he did great there too.   Dougan walks well on a leash and loves to go for walks. He doesn't pull, and he doesn't have any reactivity to other animals, people, bikes, rollerblades, skateboards, etc. I brought him to Scheel's and he was perfect.  It was very busy and I was there to buy shoes which I needed to try on.  Dougan was very friendly with everyone he met, and he laid down and patiently waited while I was trying shoes on.  As you can imagine, people wanted to stop and meet him and he was great with adults.  One of Dougan's best traits is that he loves to nap! He rarely will stand or even sit when he isn't moving - he always lies down his legs back behind him like a frog. It's the cutest!  He is great at matching your activity level; he loves to go for walks and go out and about, but if you want to just watch Netflix and relax, he is totally on board with that.  Dougan is also great at keeping himself entertained.  He plays with toys by himself and loves to chew on bones. If you are looking for a napping partner - he is definitely your guy!  Dougan has it all; totally adorable, he is a perfect size, extremely friendly, potty trained, and crate trained. Please consider meeting this handsome boy! 7/19/21Volunteer Feedback: Oh boy.....this guy is a tank...A tank full of love, grunts, & kisses! Dougan's very food motivated, he almost won't budge if there's not something in it for him. However, if he's ready to bust a move, you had better be ready. One way to know you're out of shape is by trying to keep up with Dougan on a run. He's silly and stubborn and whoever gives him a fur-ever home will have endless days of love & laughter! **  Dougan tested positive for Ehrlichia and has completed treatment. A dog's immune system can carry antibodies for Ehrlichia for as long as four years. This means that a dog may test positive for that duration.        Ehrlichia info: https://pets.webmd.com/dogs/what-is-ehrlichia-in-dogs NOTE:  Dougan is dog selective and has resource-guarding tendencies. However, after evaluating him, we believe he can live with another dog given the right situation. Dougan would do best as an only dog, however, he would do well with a female dog, with laid back/low energy level.  He also has exhibited resource guarding of bones, toys, treats, and food and thus none of these items can be around Dougan when he is with another dog. He must be fed separately and no treats given while with another dog. There cannot be toys or bones left out when he is with another dog. He does love bones and toys though, so he can be given these items when separate from another dog. Think of it as alone time; giving Dougan and any other resident dog 30 minutes (for example) separate from each other where they can enjoy bones and toys safely.  Now, this is not to say that after a period of time these restrictions could be gradually loosened, in the proper way.  If you are interested in meeting Dougan and have a female dog, we would be happy to provide support to properly introduce him into your home!

Look for other dogs for adoption!
