Pepita: The dog in the box. Recently we saw an urgent plea from one of our South Texas partners. Someone had left a tiny dog in a box outside the gate to the municipal shelter. It was Friday night, the shelter was closed until Monday, it was about to get dark, and the weather was an uncharacteristically cold 50 degrees. The rescuer pulled into the lot to discover this little Chihuahua, terrified and trembling in the same spot someone left her. The rescuer very quickly determined the reason the little girl stayed put in her box; she is totally blind. She got her tiny new friend into the warm car and started searching for a rescue and foster. At the same time, one of our founders was browsing Facebook and saw the plea for help. Finding a foster for a dog in immediate need is hard, no matter where the dog is, but fortunately one of our long time fosters in the Rio Grande Valley had an open spot and we were able to get her to safety the very same night. Welcome to NorthStar, "Pepita"! Pepita is a sweet old blind lady and in her foster home, she is starting to believe she is safe. She wiggles with joy and is as happy as can be...when she’s not sleeping. We do know that she is a senior, likely 10-12 years old, and is nearly or totally blind. She is wants to be involved in whatever you're doing or camped in your lap. She is doing great with all the foster's dogs including a young large breed puppy, but we'd recommend a quieter home with other smaller less active dogs since she can get overwhelmed easily due to her sight impediment. We DO think a home with another dog or two is needed since blind dogs have an easier time if they can follow another dog around to "learn the ropes". Stay tuned for more information on Pepita as we get it.
Adoption Process
Potential adopters will submit an adoption application. The adopters information will be screened including veterinary and personal references. After the first round of screening they will get the chance to meet the pet. If it is a good match, as deemed by NSPR volunteers, the adopter will complete an adoption contract and pay the fee of 375.00. All animals will be spayed/neutered and fully vetted prior to adoption. The only exception would be small puppies in which case the adopter will submit an additional deposit refundable upon proof of spay/neuter. In the event an animal is no longer wanted, the adoption contract will stipulate that the animal always gets returned to us, and is never sold, given away, or surrendered to another rescue or shelter.
