Why Were The Dog Treats Recalled?
Routine nutrition tests are performed throughout the manufacturing process to ensure proper levels of all nutrients in the products. During a standard nutrition test, there were elevated levels of Vitamin D in Simply Nourish products, specifically their frozen food.
What Caused The Recall?
Following the subsequent investigation, the company found that “the problem arose as a result of the vitamin mix dosage being significantly reduced by the vitamin mix manufacturer, and this change was not detected or properly communicated.”
Due to this, the dosage was not reduced and resulted in elevated Vitamin D levels.
Where Was The Food Sold? What Do I Do With The Food Now?
All of the affected Simply Nourish products were distributed to and sold by various PetSmart locations nationwide. The recommended guidance is to immediately stop feeding the recalled food to your dog and return it to the original purchase location for a full refund.
What Do I Need To Know About Vitamin D Toxicity In Dogs?
A healthy level of Vitamin D is a part of your dog’s well-being and is taken care of by their standard diet. However, if you are concerned your dog may be experiencing increased levels, they will begin exhibiting symptoms. The symptoms may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, excessive drooling, and unexpected weight loss.
Though it is rare, dogs that consume high levels of Vitamin D over a long duration can begin to experience serious health issues, including but not limited to kidney failure and untimely death.
If your dog is exhibiting any of the symptoms above after consuming the products, you should contact your veterinarian.
