Chocolate, whilst infinitely delicious for humans is considered to be poisonous to both cats and dogs. It contains an alkaloid named ‘Theobromine’ which can lead to theobromine poisoning if left untreated. If your pooch ingests chocolate (even a small quantity) you should contact your local veterinarian as soon as possible for advice.

3. Tomatoes and Raw Potatoes

Glycoalkaloid Solanine is a poisonous compound that can cause digestive ailments in all animals, which can be found in these foods. Make sure you don’t keep your potatoes on the bottom shelf where your sneaky sausage can get their paws on them.

4. Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins need to be avoided as their toxicity has been linked to kidney failure in dogs, their toxicity is well documented in dogs. Although the exact substance that causes the toxic reaction is not yet known, dogs should not eat any grapes and raisins because even small amounts can prove to be fatally toxic for a dog.

5. Onions and garlic

It is not currently known what quantity of onion or garlic needs to be consumed by your sausage to be considered poisonous. However, if they do manage to eat some, you can expect pale gums, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you notice a rapid heartbeat or blood in the urine after you dachshund consumes onion or garlic, it is a sign to ring your local vet.

Xylitol is a sugar-free sweater derived from fruit and vegetables with 40% fewer calories than sugar. Xylitol stimulates the pancreas causing it to secrete insulin which lowers blood pressure and can cause liver damage. Even 30 minutes after ingestion your pooch may begin to lose their feeling in their legs and even have a seizure. It is imperative you seek veterinary treatment in this situation. If your hound ingests some lollies or other known candy food, check if the ingredients have xylitol.

7. Coffee

Dogs are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than people are. While a few licks of coffee, tea or soda will not contain enough caffeine to cause poisoning in most cases, the ingestion of moderate amounts of coffee grounds, tea bags, or diet pills can easily cause death in small dogs.
